UK Vape Tax 2026: What It Means for Vape Prices

UK Vape Tax 2026: What It Means for Vape Prices

From 1 October 2026, a new UK tax on vaping products comes into effect.

Officially called Vaping Products Duty (VPD), the new tax will be charged at £2.20 for every 10ml of vaping liquid, or 22p per ml.

If you vape, this means you'll start seeing changes to the prices of many vape products from October.

How much is the new vape tax?

The new duty is:

£2.20 per 10ml of vape liquid

For example:

  • 2ml of vape liquid = 44p duty
  • 10ml of vape liquid = £2.20 duty
  • 50ml of vape liquid = £11 duty
  • 100ml of vape liquid = £22 duty

The amount is based on how much vaping liquid is in the product.

These figures are the amount of Vaping Products Duty, rather than necessarily the exact amount a product's retail price will increase by.

Does the vape tax apply to nicotine-free vape juice?

Yes.

The tax applies whether the vaping liquid contains nicotine or not. HMRC confirms that it covers vaping liquid in products including:

  • Nicotine salts and other 10ml e-liquids
  • Prefilled pods & kits
  • Shortfills
  • Nicotine shots
  • Vape liquid contained within vaping devices

The tax is charged on the vaping liquid itself, not the vape device hardware.

What does this mean for shortfills?

Larger bottles are particularly affected because the duty is charged according to the amount of liquid.

A 100ml shortfill attracts £22 of Vaping Products Duty.

A 50ml shortfill attracts £11 of Vaping Products Duty.

This applies even when the shortfill contains no nicotine, because nicotine-free vaping liquid is also included in the new tax.

What about prefilled pods and big-puff vapes?

Prefilled vape products are taxed according to the amount of vaping liquid they contain.

For example, HMRC confirms that a standard 2ml pod attracts 44p of Vaping Products Duty. A product containing more liquid will attract more duty based on the same rate of 22p per ml.

When does the UK vape tax start?

1 October 2026.

From that date, vape prices will begin reflecting the new Vaping Products Duty.

Will Vape Myst prices increase?

From 1 October 2026, manufacturers & retailers will be adjusting prices to take account of the new Vaping Products Duty. We will increase prices in line with other retailers, whilst striving to keep pricing competitive.

We know price is important to our customers, so we'll continue working hard to keep our products competitively priced while offering a wide choice of trusted vape brands.

The amount prices change will vary between products depending on the amount of vaping liquid they contain and the prices charged by manufacturers and suppliers.

Why is the government introducing the vape tax?

The government says the new duty is intended to reduce the affordability and appeal of vaping, particularly among young people and non-smokers, while continuing to maintain a financial incentive for smokers to switch away from cigarettes.

If you're unsure how the changes affect a product you regularly buy, speak to the Vape Myst team and we'll be happy to explain.
